Frequently Asked Questions

Can I volunteer to help?

Of course! We have opportunities year-round for volunteers to trace and cut fabric for our infant warming incubator blankets.

Is there any maintenance requirements for the blankets and packs beyond cleaning?

We do not have maintenance requirements beyond cleaning.

Warmilu Recycling Program Overview: How do I recycle or dispose of my blankets and packs?

The infant warming blanket materials can be recycled/made into secondary products such as pillow cases or purses. The warming pack disk is made from metal and can be recycled or sent back to Warmilu for reuse. The remaining materials can be disposed of in a normal (general) waste stream. The Blanket and InstaWarmer materials can be disposed of as solid general waste and are food grade, medical grade, and non-toxic.

Detailed: The Warmilu packs can each be used at least 100 times by medical personnel. When they are used in full or broken, the warming packs are part of the general (normal) medical devices waste stream. The heat pack would go into normal waste stream unless exposed to other waste stream for toxic materials. If the pack is exposed to patient bodily materials, the pack is collected with other trash and disposed of in a biohazard bag. The warming pack materials are non-toxic, food-grade, medical-grade, and nonhazardous materials. All materials are latex-free.

This understanding is based on a discussion with the CIO Frank Westrum at the Washington State Department of Health, Agency Tech. The Department of Quality at the hospital determines locally what waste stream a used infant warming blanket and pack will belong in. According to the DEQ in Washington, heat packs are general/normal waste stream.

First Choice Cooperative Recycling Method: If possible, the Warmilu team asks the customer to send the warming pack back to 326 West Liberty Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. All intact metal activator disks are removed from the warming pack and used in future warming packs.

All infant warming incubator blanket fabrics can be reused by cutting and sewing teams to be made into secondary products. Fabrics are non-toxic, medical-grade, and nonhazardous materials which can be reconstituted and made into pillows, purses, or other secondary upcycled products.

Blanket and Pack Material Scraps

All warming pack scraps are disposed of in the general (normal) waste stream. All infant warming incubator blanket scraps are saved and used as stuffing for Warmilu holiday pillows.
